Sorry, I know this post isn’t Earth-shaking news and won’t interest everyone. I joined Twitter in 2014; after eight years I had over 22,000 followers. But for the past three years, I have been brutally shadow-banned by Twitter/X. Instead of getting dozens and hundreds of retweets like I used to, now I typically get two or three. They do this by tightly limiting the views of any Tweet I originate. According to AI, a person’s views should equal about 10 to 15 percent of his/her followers, even if a post is not retweeted. So, based on my current number of followers, I should be averaging around 2,500 to 4,000 views. But Twitter’s algorithm is set so my views are automatically shut off at between 150 and 220. If they’re retweeted, the views go higher, but very rarely above 1,000.
As Twitter/X CEO Linda Yaccarino said, Twitter/X won’t limit your speech, but it will limit your reach. Yaccarino, of course, has served on several boards of Klaus Schwab’s World Economic Forum.
So I have started a new Twitter account. My handle there is @jamesperloff2. I am, through an automated process, notifying my followers via Direct Message (DM), but this will take over a month as Twitter limits the number of daily DMs. I am also migrating the people I follow to the new account.
I realize what many readers are thinking. “They’ll shadow-ban you anyway!” That may well be. But maybe not. I have no idea what triggered the shadow-ban, but perhaps after three years the person who started the ban is no longer with Twitter.
So I may indeed be wasting my time, but my current account is so tightly limited that it is virtually worthless. I figured I’d give it a shot.
UPDATE 2-25-2025!! THREE DAYS AFTER I PUBLISHED THIS POST, TWITTER SUSPENDED MY NEW ACCOUNT. I ONLY HAD 37 POSTS ON THE ACCOUNT, MOST OF WHICH WERE REPOSTS OF OTHER PEOPLE’S TWEETS. I HAVE REVIEWED THE “X RULES,” AND CANNOT SEE HOW I VIOLATED ANY OF THEM. I HAVE APPEALED THE SUSPENSION, BUT AM NOT ESPECIALLY HOPEFUL.
